Sue and I are always up for a challenge when it comes to food. Our challenge this time was coming up with a recipe to enter the "Sweeten Your Summer With Molasses" contest being held by Crosby's Molasses. (You can check out their website HERE)
I immediately knew I wanted to make a burger with molasses. We all know that combining sweet & savory leads to good things.
Let me just get this out of the way - this is the best burger ever.
In the history of ever.
Pretty bold statement, I know. But it happens to be true.
It's not a meek and mild this-has-hints-of-blah-blah-blah burger. It is an in-your-face, sweet and spicy, ooey gooey, giant handful of stupendousness burger.
Yup, "stupendousness", it's totally a thing now.
Don't believe me?
Make this. You'll see.
The Pro-Mo Burger
1 lb lean ground beef
1/4 cup Crosby's Fancy Molasses
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 Tbsp dried oregano
salt & pepper
1/3 cup oats
8 slices provolone
In a mixing bowl, combine the beef, molasses, and garlic.
Add in the egg, oregano, and salt & pepper.
Lastly, add in the oats.
Stir until very well combined. I like to get in there with my hands and really make sure things are mixed up.
Divide into 4 equal portions.
Take 1 portion.
Divide it roughly in half.
Press half into a patty (approximately the size of your palm).
Take 1 slice of provolone and tear it into pieces. Pile the pieces in the center of the patty.
Top with the other half of the beef and press firmly together. (As you can see, I use a 3 1/2 inch ring as a mold to get my burgers all the same size. This is optional.)
Repeat with remaining 3 portions of beef until you have 4 ridiculously delicious looking patties.
Chill in fridge, covered, for at least an hour before cooking.
When chilled, remove from fridge and grill on the BBQ until done.
(Or..... if you are like me.... you may have to cook them on the stove top because a bear destroyed your BBQ. True story.)
When they are done - before you remove them from the grill, place a slice of provolone on top of each of the burgers. Cook until cheese is all melty - another 1 - 2 minutes.
Serve immediately with your favorite burger toppings - ie: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, etc.
So. Flippin'. Amazing.
Sue wanted hers on a cheddar jalapeno bun.
Also a brilliant idea.
Are you drooling yet?
Well.... just in case you're not... how about a little peek at the inside with all that gooey cheese?
*Cue angels singing*
Who knew molasses could elevate a lowly BBQ burger to the level of Best Burger In The Universe?
"Pro" as in provolone, "Mo" as in molasses.
You know you want one.
